Phil Ryan returned to the line up in 1997; at first it wasn't clear if this was temporary while Deke took sick leave, but eventually he got himself well entrenched again. Phil had spent two separate spells with the Man band during the seventies, including the final lineup which produced the All's Well finale. Away from Man, he was involved in solo work and a project with The Neutrons. His keyboards then and now, contribute to the spacey, psychedelic side of the band.
In the interim, Phil has lived in Denmark and worked extensively with Pete Brown, occasionally under the name of The Interoceters; he's also done some film and soundtrack work.
